BoysTown 'Hope' Appeal
A message from Brother Brian
In reading Joshua's journey with BoysTown, one is able to reflect on how many other young people in our community desperately need our help.
Joshua's life is not too dissimilar to other countless young people 'on the streets', who for the most part feel isolated and lonely – calling very few 'friend'. While on the outside they may appear full of confidence, deep down there is a lifetime of anguish, which comes through a lack of support and self-confidence, and an inability to feel comfortable with others.
Every time I hear the stories of these young lives, I realise 'there but for the grace of God go I' and think of the people who helped me in my life journey. For most of us, there has been a time where someone has stood by us, persevered with us and that has made all the difference.
Perseverance in service is a core value at BoysTown. Our organisational values are integrated and blend with those of each staff member, enriching our community and the lives of the young people in our care.
Our founder Saint John Baptist de la Salle told the Brothers to "make no distinction between their life and employment". Faith in young people is a commitment to a way of living beyond good and secure feelings. Ultimately, faith is not in the head or heart but in the action of sustained commitment. The greatest gift we can give to those around us is the promise of faithfulness. We will stay the course and never leave when the going gets tough.
Joshua felt this core value when he came to BoysTown and now spreads his message to others by sharing his story of hope. "When I tell young people about what I've achieved, I see surprise on their faces. I reckon it gets them thinking about what they could do too."
Every day young people like Joshua reach out to BoysTown for help and support. Without your generosity, we would be unable to assist them to build their skills and confidence and reach their full potential.
Thank you for your caring and compassion. You truly make a difference.
